Mains stopcock on the incoming water supply

Our work: Mains stopcock on the incoming water supply

About water pressure solutions

Water pressure problems here mean weak flow or low pressure at your taps and showers, coming from the mains water supply into the property. That's a different issue from boiler pressure, which is the sealed heating circuit's own gauge reading and is covered separately under boiler repair; if your boiler pressure gauge looks fine but your shower still runs weak, the two aren't connected, and treating one as if it were the other won't fix anything.

Causes range from old or narrow pipework restricting flow, limescale build-up inside pipes and fittings narrowing them further over time, and genuinely low mains pressure reaching the property, which in Havering is usually supplied by Essex & Suffolk Water. A gravity-fed system with a header tank in the loft can also give naturally lower pressure than a combi or mains-fed system, particularly upstairs.

Diagnosing it properly means testing flow and pressure at several points in the property rather than guessing from one symptom, checking the incoming mains pressure and pipe diameter, and inspecting older pipework for restrictions or scale. That tells us whether the fix is something inside the property or a limitation of the supply itself.

Where a boost is appropriate, that might mean a booster pump or an accumulator, but any pump connected to the mains has to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, so it's not simply a case of fitting whatever pump is available off the shelf. We assess and fix water pressure issues across Romford and the wider Havering area, and we'll always explain what's causing the problem before recommending a fix.

Water Pressure Solutions questions

Clear answers to your most common plumbing concerns.

Can you increase the pressure for my whole house?
Yes, we can install whole-house booster systems to ensure great pressure everywhere.
Why is my water pressure low in only one part of the house?
This usually points to a local restriction, such as an old or narrow section of pipework, a partially closed valve, or limescale build-up affecting just that run, rather than a mains supply problem, since a genuine mains issue would usually affect the whole property evenly.
Is low water pressure the same as low boiler pressure?
No, they're unrelated. Boiler pressure refers to the sealed heating circuit inside your boiler, while water pressure at your taps and showers comes from the mains supply. A boiler can show perfectly normal pressure while the taps run weak, and vice versa.
Can I fit my own pump to boost water pressure?
Any pump connected to the mains water supply has to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, so it's worth getting this assessed rather than fitting one yourself, particularly around backflow prevention and where the pump draws from.
Does the water company control my water pressure?
The water company is responsible for the pressure of the mains supply up to your property boundary, but pressure inside the property depends on your own pipework, any tanks or cylinders, and your plumbing layout, which is where most of the fixable problems actually are.
Will low water pressure get worse over time?
It can, particularly where the cause is limescale building up inside pipes and fittings, which narrows them further each year. A pressure and flow test can tell you whether it's a stable issue or one that's likely to keep declining.
