Our work: New double-panel radiator with a thermostatic valve.

About radiator installation & repair

Radiator installation and repair covers fitting new radiators, whether standard panel radiators or designer and column styles, and fixing existing ones that aren't heating properly, leaking, or making noise. It's one of the more common jobs alongside boiler work, and often comes up when a homeowner is redecorating or upgrading a room's heating.

For new radiators, sizing to the room matters more than the style chosen. A radiator that's too small for the room's heat loss will never bring it up to temperature no matter how hard the boiler works, so we size against the room rather than just matching what was there before. Connecting to existing pipework is usually straightforward, though extending pipework is sometimes needed where a radiator is being repositioned or a room extended.

Repairs are usually one of a few familiar faults: a radiator cold at the bottom points to sludge settled in the radiator, which needs flushing rather than just bleeding; cold at the top despite bleeding often means a stuck valve or an airlock elsewhere in the system; and leaks at joints or valves are generally a worn valve or a loose connection rather than a fault in the radiator itself.

Where sludge is affecting the whole system rather than one radiator, a power flush clears it through the pipework rather than just the radiators, and balancing the lockshield valves afterwards evens out how much hot water each radiator gets, so rooms heat at a similar rate. We carry out this work across Romford and Havering.

Radiator Installation & Repair questions

Clear answers to your most common plumbing concerns.

Why is my radiator cold at the bottom?
This usually indicates a build-up of sludge, which can be resolved with power flushing.
Can you fit a bigger radiator than the one I currently have?
Yes, and it's often the right call if the current radiator was undersized for the room to begin with. We work out the room's heat loss to recommend the right size rather than just replacing like-for-like by default, which matters more than the radiator's style for how warm the room actually feels.
What's the difference between bleeding a radiator and power flushing?
Bleeding releases trapped air from a single radiator and is a quick fix for cold spots at the top. Power flushing forces water at high velocity through the entire heating system to clear sludge and debris, and is used when the problem is system-wide rather than one radiator.
Can you replace just one radiator or does the whole system need draining?
You can replace a single radiator on its own. The section of the system it's connected to is drained down locally for the swap, using the isolation valves at that radiator, but the rest of the heating system elsewhere in the house doesn't need to be drained or disturbed.
Do designer radiators heat a room as well as standard panel radiators?
It depends on the model's heat output (its BTU or kW rating) rather than its style. Some column and vertical designer radiators match or exceed a panel radiator's output; others are chosen more for looks and need sizing carefully against the room to keep it warm.
Why is one radiator in my house always colder than the rest?
This is usually a system that's out of balance rather than a fault with that one radiator, meaning the lockshield valves need adjusting so hot water is distributed evenly. It can also point to sludge collecting in that particular radiator if it's an older part of the system.
