Inspection chamber cleared and running freely after a drain unblock

Our work: Inspection chamber cleared and running freely after a drain unblock

About blocked drains

A blocked drain is any waste pipe that has stopped carrying water away: a sink that won't empty, a toilet that rises when you flush, a shower tray standing in water, or an outside drain and inspection chamber backing up. We clear blockages in homes across Romford and Havering, then look for the reason it happened so you're not calling someone again next month.

Inside the house, most blockages are close to the fitting: fat and food waste in a kitchen trap, hair and soap in a bath or shower waste, or wipes and too much paper in a toilet. These are usually cleared by taking the trap apart, plunging, or working a drain snake through the pipe. Outside, the usual culprits are fat that has set further down the run, leaves and silt in gullies, and, on older clay drains, tree roots finding their way in through the joints.

Before anything is cleared, it's worth knowing whose drain it is. Pipes that serve only your property and sit within its boundary are yours. Shared sewers, and the lateral drain between your boundary and the public sewer, belong to the sewerage company: in Havering that's Thames Water, and across much of the rest of Essex it's Anglian Water. Your water bill names the company that handles your sewerage. If your neighbours are backing up too, or the chamber nearest the road is full while yours is clear, the blockage is probably theirs to fix at no cost to you, and we'll tell you so.

If a drain keeps blocking, or there are signs of a cracked or collapsed pipe such as a bad smell, damp patches near the run or a sunken patch of ground, the next step is a CCTV survey to see inside the pipe. Where a job needs heavy jetting or excavation, we'll say so plainly and point you to the right drainage specialist rather than guess.

Blocked Drains questions

Clear answers to your most common plumbing concerns.

Is a blocked drain my responsibility or the water company's?
It depends where the blockage is. Drains serving only your home and inside your boundary are yours. Shared sewers and the lateral drain from your boundary to the public sewer belong to the sewerage company, which is Thames Water in Havering and Anglian Water across much of Essex. If a neighbour is affected too, it's usually theirs.
How can I tell if the blockage is inside or outside the house?
If only one fitting is slow, the blockage is almost always in that fitting's waste or trap. If several are slow at once, especially on the ground floor, or the toilet gurgles when the bath empties, the problem is further down, often in the outside drain. Lifting the nearest inspection chamber cover shows whether it's full.
Should I use chemical drain unblocker?
For a slow kitchen or bathroom waste a drain cleaner sometimes helps, but they rarely shift a full blockage and can damage older pipework and seals. Never use them in a toilet or pipe that's completely blocked and standing full, because the chemical sits in the pipe and makes it dangerous to clear.
Why does my drain keep blocking?
Repeat blockages usually mean something is catching waste: a build-up of set fat, a badly angled joint, a dip where the pipe has sunk, or roots getting in through old clay joints. Clearing the blockage treats the symptom; a CCTV survey shows the cause so it can be fixed properly.
Can wet wipes really block a drain?
Yes. Wipes don't break down like toilet paper, even the ones labelled flushable, and they tangle with fat and hair into solid plugs. They're one of the most common causes of blocked toilets and outside drains. Bin them, along with cotton buds, sanitary products and cooking fat.
Do you clear blocked toilets?
Yes. A blocked toilet is usually cleared with a toilet plunger or auger. If it keeps happening, or other fittings are affected at the same time, the blockage is likely further down in the soil pipe or outside drain, and we'll check the inspection chamber to find it.
