About burst pipe repair

A burst pipe is usually the result of water freezing and expanding inside a pipe that isn't adequately protected, most often in a loft, on an external wall, or in an unheated outbuilding, and it commonly shows up when the ice thaws and the split lets go. Pipework in Havering lofts and older external walls is particularly exposed during a cold snap if it was fitted without lagging, so a burst often turns up as the first hard frost breaks.

The immediate priority is always isolating the water, either at the stopcock or, where fitted, at a service valve on the affected section, and draining down the remaining water through the taps before any repair work starts. Once the pipe is dry and accessible, the repair method depends on what's there and what it feeds.

Copper pipe can be repaired with a soldered joint for a permanent fix, or with a compression fitting where heat can't safely be used nearby. Push-fit fittings are a quick, reliable option in a lot of situations too, particularly where access is tight or a section needs replacing without waiting for pipe to cool from a nearby joint. Which one's right depends on the pipe material, the location, and what's practical on the day.

Once the repair's in, the affected section gets lagged or otherwise protected before it's closed back up, since a pipe that's burst once in an exposed spot will do it again in the next freeze without proper insulation.

Burst Pipe Repair questions

Clear answers to your most common plumbing concerns.

What causes pipes to burst?
Typically freezing temperatures or high water pressure combined with aged pipework.
Why do pipes in my loft keep freezing?
Loft pipework often sits above the insulation layer rather than below it, so it's exposed to the same cold air as the roof space rather than protected by the heat of the house. Lagging the pipe itself, not just the loft floor, is usually what's needed to stop it happening again.
Is push-fit pipe as reliable as soldered joints?
Used correctly and on the right pipe, push-fit fittings give a reliable seal and are widely used, including in places where soldering isn't practical. Soldered joints are generally preferred for permanent pipework in accessible locations, but push-fit has its place, particularly for a quick, sound repair.
Can I lag pipes myself to stop this happening again?
Yes, foam pipe lagging from a builders' merchant is straightforward to fit yourself on accessible loft or garage pipework. Pipes in awkward spots, or anywhere the insulation has been disturbed by other work, are worth having checked so nothing gets missed before winter.
What causes a pipe to burst even when it isn't freezing?
High water pressure combined with old or corroded pipework, or a joint that's simply failed with age, can cause a burst without any frost involved. The repair approach is the same - isolate, drain down, and replace or reseal the affected section - but it's worth having pressure checked afterwards if that turns out to be a factor.
Will a burst pipe repair match my existing pipework?
Where possible, yes - copper pipe is repaired in copper and plastic in plastic, so the rest of the system stays consistent and any future work is straightforward. Where a straight match isn't practical, because of what's available or how the pipe run is configured, a suitable connector is used to join the two materials safely and securely.
